A Song in Your Pocket

This free PDF is a collection of fifteen tried-and-true, song-based imaginative and playful activities for meaningful inclusion of minimally- and non-speaking children in an elementary general music classroom.

This volume was Jess’ final project for her Berklee College of Music program in Music Education and Autism. It includes ready-to-print choice boards and visuals to accompany all of the activities. Songwriters Neuba Silva, David Landau, Katie Norregaard, Jenny Focht, Stephanie Leavell, and Sarah Pirtle gave permission for their works to be included along with traditional folk songs from the US, Central America, the Spanish Caribbean, and Asia.

Many of these activities are among our all-time greatest hits. All of them are song-based, engage the imagination, involve child-like play, and do not require the students to sing or speak to deeply and musically engage with the activity. If the activity requires a communication tool like a choice board, it is provided and ready to print. See our blog post about choice boards.

These activities are most appropriate for students PK-5. Some require egg shakers or movement scarves.

This collection is a great starter pack for teachers beginning to work with neurodivergent students in sub-separate or inclusion music class settings. The volume begins with a substantial introduction that includes some explanations of methodology. More information is available on the Medley blog and social media sites. Many of these activities are demonstrated in our Intro to Adaptive Music Education course both online and in person.
